Hop-forward beers (Double IPAs, Imperial Red Ales, New England Style IPAs) are great, but sometimes you want the malt to take center stage. It takes a big beer to balance those scales, and our With Vision – Scottish Wee Heavy Ale offers the perfect example of malt up front, where hops play a highly restrained role.
There is a story of a Scottish brewery that still has the original hops cone from their earliest days, and they ceremonially wave it over each batch they brew. The style may demonstrate some frugality when it comes to hop bitterness, but it calls for a free hand with the malt. We like to think that With Vision celebrates malt complexity. Caramel and toffee notes lead the way with toasted, nutty flavors and a bit of roast or chocolate malt expanding on that foundation.
